Behind closed doors

You woke up in the morning

expecting the smell of eggs,

fresh orange juice invading

the house. But instead you found

your mom on the dining table

crying and your dad nowhere

to be found.

Your parents were that one couple that

never have an argument, at least

that is what you thought because

you never witnessed it. But now it made

more sense the multiple nights at grandma

and grandpa was just an easy and innocent

way to hide it all.

All the smiles, the laughter, all the signs

of happiness— they were all a show to hide

the silent cries and the broken hearts.

But now you can't help wondering

if this is the reason why you are so good

at hiding and bottling up your feelings

and emotions like a thief lurking in the dark.

Or maybe you don’t want anyone to

break your heart like they did.
