First Crossing

Learning about death:

Every low cable loosely tied to its midsection barely keeping the bridge suspended.

Learning about birth:

Every beginning gate of metal means a cold new start and end.

Learning about myself:

Every imperfection in the road, the rusting cables and twisting rusted metal.

Learning about my uncle:

Every hefty cement base, most forgotten about but most important piece.

The first time I crossed,

I wasn't alone;
