Not the Same Pair

You are a pair

of new white sneakers,

but there is a mound of mud

covering the grass.

And as you begin to tiptoe in it

you absorb the filth.

To scrape it off—

It is a waste of time.

You are no longer new

and white. You have

faded, losing the luster

you once had.
