Marriage of Organs (In memory of Billy Budd)

His brain had no peace. His heart was hard.

My heart had no sight. My mind was cold.

He tried to school my heart with stiff rules

I tried to win his head with adamant words.

I love you, dad.

Where is that in the bible?

It’s Monopoly money to him.

Be still

and listen to my heart.

He is a deaf teacher still, braining on.

Only if you can cite a verse his mind can see will he bend his iron attention.

But didn’t Jesus say—

It has nothing to do with Jesus, apparently. For him.

He made his own miniature bible, and wrote it only within the limits

of his brain.
