Little Toes

She plays in the sandbox. Shoes off, socks abandoned. That’s the proper way to do it. You can feel the grains of sand squish between your toes, your skin appreciating the unique texture inside four panels of space. She’s so young and she already knows how the world works. I look at her short legs and round cheeks and remember the day we got to call her ours. What a weird, pink thing she was. Her feet were so tiny it was ridiculous. Soon we’ll be moving on from Velcro to real laces. Dear g-d, please don’t trip.
